Picture from Cave Crew 3! Photographer: Bianca Hogan

Hey guys!

So the crew of the cave is back! And this time there are 5 new members! But you already know 3 of them from Cave Crew 2; Katiah, Acacia and Zara – the girls from the “haunted” school. You will meet the new 2 soon.

We have got 4 new macs coming into school, so once we get them, we will edit the film, then post online!

Is this gonna be the last Cave Crew? You’ll have to wait and see!

33 Things the Youth of Newman Can Do

// November 24th, 2009 // No Comments » // Blog, Our Say

I once had a mentor tell me that when working to empower people, all you can really do is ‘hold the crown out in front of them’ – it’s up to them to step up into that crown and claim it.

We’ve been in Newman for nearly 12 weeks now working to help local kids make media, videos and websites, as well as fundraise, run a film night and even get mentions in both print and on television!

On our last ‘workday’ with them we did a nice review of everything they’d learned. At this point, without any youth center or community technology space to call their own – it’s up to Newman’s youth to determine their future as the town’s central media makers. Our hope is that they’ll be able build on the skills and creativity they’ve developed these past 12 weeks.

That said, here’s a blog ‘toast’ to the 33 things the youth of Newman can do…so far. (more…)

Sleepover Yourspace

// October 23rd, 2009 // No Comments » // Blog, Events

Sleepover Yourspace was a blast! Around 15 people came and we ended up watching a movie called ‘Bring It On’ (corny chic flick) because ‘Up’ had a few problems…

Setting it up was HOT! But it was worth it ’cause we all had soo much fun and slept really early!! *cough cough*

We played the wii almost all night and Shakthi flogged at tennis!! :D After, we sat in a circle and introduced ourselves to everyone else, then some people wrote more things they wanted to see in Newman for a youth centre… Once we did that, it was time to settle down which was around 11:30pm to 12:00am.. We watched ‘Monsters vs. Aliens’ and everyone fell asleep… And of course I, (Kimberly) didn’t sleep until around 3:00 -4:00am because I’m pretty sure I had too much cordial… Hahahahaha!

Thanks to everyone that came to the movie night and the sleepover! We hope you had fun!

 Today, we all met up at Yourspace at 10:30am and stood around waiting for everyone else to come…
When everyone came, we all went to Sage’s house to get some chairs for our space, because today was the day we were getting things for it.. We had 2 cars, so when we picked up the two couches from Sage’s house we dropped it off to Yourspace and took off for the dump…
Once we got to the dump, we all got out of the car and went searching for things we might use for the youth centre. We found wires, a no smoking sign, a few tables, a speaker, lockers, a bathtub and lots more stuff that we could use…
When we got back to the youth centre, we unloaded the cars and put the things into our place, and once everything was in we talked about where to put the stuff, and what we should do for a fundraiser, we decided to go for a movie night with a sleepover: Maximum 35 kids…
After that around 2 o’clock we went to get some lunch, when we were out we saw Giuseppe and Erica, so we brought them back with us…
Once we finished lunch, we went back to the youth centre and had DJ lessons, taught by Morgan… The rest of the day was just pretty chill, with all the music playing and the DJ-ing happening…
At the end of the day, we built a sculpture out of wires and did some hotseats in the sky..
